What’s in a Name?

When you have a competition it can be really fun and motivating for students to come up with their own team names. Really encourage your students to be creative and incorporate fun things about themselves, their hobbies, and their cultures into the names (I usually outlaw my name (the teacher’s name), the winners, the best team, and other team names I feel are ‘lazy’). I will often keep the same team names for the whole week and the students become very motivated “to do their team name proud”. It is a great way to encourage bonding and group dynamics. If you are worried that keeping the same teams for the whole week can lead to over-competitiveness or ‘trash talking’, change up the teams a little each day, but keep the same names.
